How does IUI work?

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is a technique that is used less frequently over the years. The treatment is simply to place a prepared sample of sperm into the uterus through the cervix using a special fine catheter at the time of ovulation.

Who is IUI suitable for?

Whilst this treatment previously was popular as it was seen as less intense or expensive treatment to IVF, unfortunately it has been shown that this technique however will not improve the chances of pregnancy for couples who are experiencing unexplained infertility and now it is used almost exclusively with donor sperm where it is known as DI/IUI or DI.

Occasionally where there are physical barriers preventing intercourse, IUI can be used with the partners sperm, or if IVF is not wanted by couples for religious or moral reasons IUI can be considered.
