Hystero Contrast Salpingogram (HYCOSY)

pregnancy genetic screening

What is a HyCoSy and why have I been asked to have this test?

A HyCoSy is a special ultrasound investigation that is undertaken safely at North West Fertility as an outpatient procedure by an experienced clinician. This screening test has been arranged, so that we can determine whether the fallopian tubes are blocked or not. This test may help us to find a reason for why you are having difficulty in achieving a pregnancy and determine the most appropriate management for you.

How is the test performed?

The procedure is performed, by firstly performing a baseline vaginal ultra-sound scan, to determine the position of the uterus and ovaries. The ultra-sound probe is removed, and a speculum is passed into the vagina, so that the cervix (the opening to the uterus) can be viewed. A fine catheter is then inserted into the uterus via the cervix, and a small amount of air is passed down the catheter to inflate a small balloon which keeps the catheter in position. The speculum is removed, and the ultra-sound scan probe repositioned, and scanning is recommenced. The echo-contrast solution is injected slowly into the uterus via the catheter and the flow of the solution is observed on the scanner. The clinician then determines whether the tubes are blocked or not after observing any spill of the contrast medium from the end of the tubes. The cavity of the uterus is also observed, and any irregularities noted. The procedure normally takes about 15 – 20 minutes.

When is the test performed?

The test is performed during the first half of your cycle, so that we can ensure you are not pregnant when we undertake the procedure. We advise that you avoid intercourse or use protection until after you have the test and ask you to bring a first morning urine sample to the unit on the day of the test so we can perform a pregnancy test. There is no problem trying for a pregnancy after you have had the test.

How do I book the test?

To book the test, please ring North West fertility on 01244 980538, with the first day of your period. Your Clinician  will need to ensure that your partner if appropriate  has had a sperm test undertaken before you have the test and that the results of the swabs taken from you when you attended the clinic are available.

Please inform the clinician in the clinic if you have irregular or absent periods.

What are the side effects/ risks of the test?

After the procedure you may experience some mild to moderate abdominal pain and slight bleeding, but this soon resolves. It is advisable to take some simple pain relief e.g.: paracetamol half an hour before the procedure is due to take place and that you are accompanied for the appointment. Very occasionally you may feel light headed after the test, but you will be given time to recover before we discharge you. There is a risk of infection from the procedure, but every precaution is taken to reduce the risk. This is the reason we took swabs from you in the clinic, and why we treat any infections we diagnose. Allergic reaction to the contrast medium we use is extremely rare, but it is important to always alert to us to any allergies you have.

When will I get the results of the test?

You will be given the results of the test on the day by the clinician undertaking the test. Management of your care will be given to you at a follow-up appointment where we can discuss all your test results and plan the most effective treatment for you both.
