Fertility Consultation

At North West Fertility we believe the starting point before undertaking any fertility investigations is a consultation with a Fertility Specialist. This initial consultation allows us to take an in-depth history and assessment of your situation, allowing us to advise the most suitable investigations and treatments.

What to expect during a Fertility Consultation?

At this initial fertility consultation there is the opportunity to discuss lifestyle issues or concerns that may impact upon fertility and advice appropriately.  We will be able to discuss the benefit or otherwise of other non-medical treatments or adjuvants to fertility, so that individuals can be appraised of the true evidence for benefit, or otherwise and make any changes to improve their own fertility.

During the consultation we will also assess your diet/nutritional status and current exercise/level of activity and give you advice in order to ensure that you are healthy. Physical and emotional health is very important to ensure that you are able to cope with any fertility treatment necessary.

Baseline Fertility Investigations

The routine baseline screening for most women seeking pregnancy include:

1. Blood tests:

  • FSH/LH
  • AMH
  • Rubella screening
  • Chlamydia screening
  • Mid Luteal Progesterone (to confirm ovulation).

(further specialist hormone testing may be advised depending on patient’s personal and family history)

2. An ultrasound scan of the pelvis with Antral Follicle Count AFC.

3. An assessment of tubal patency HiCoSy or Laparoscopy & Dye Test.

4. A semen analysis of the male partner/ husband

The quality of information obtained from a semen analysis is very dependent upon the laboratory performing this test. We are delighted to say that all our semen analyses are performed via the Hewitt Centre at the Countess of Chester Fertility & Assisted Conception Unit , which is the first laboratory in the country to be awarded the highest quality award for semen analysis.

For male partners with very abnormal semen analysis (specifically azoospermia-
absence of sperm in the ejaculate) that would impact on their fertility, a full
consultation with a specialist in male fertility can be organized and depending
upon the semen analysis, specialist male investigations may rarely be advised
that may include.
Male Fertility Investigations (may include)
– A repeat Semen analysis is usually advised.
– Blood tests – FSH/LH/ Testosterone.
– An Ultrasound scan of the Testes.
– A karyotype examination.
– Cystic Fibrosis Screening.
