IVF / IUI using Donor Sperm
Donor sperm is most commonly used where there is no male partner ( women seeking pregnancy as a single woman or for same sex couples). In these circumstances clinicians will help women and couples decide what treatment options are best for them including IUI or IVF.
At North West Fertility we have extensive experience of utilising donor sperm and are able to guide patients through the choices of selecting the most appropriate screened and licensed sperm (from within the UK or abroad).

What is Donor Insemination (DI)?
Donor insemination is the treatment of infertility using donated sperm. It is the only treatment option available to women where there is a complete absence of sperm for treatment. Donor insemination (DI) is commonly used to treat women with the following conditions:
- For women where the male partner is infertile with a complete absence of sperm
- For Women whose male partner carries a genetic abnormality and wish to avoid it being passed to their children
- Single women
- Same sex couples
Donor Insemination can be used with both insemination of sperm into the uterus DI/IUI, or with Assisted Conception treatment DI/IVF. The optimum treatment can be discussed at your first appointment.
How to choose a Sperm Donor?
All DI treatment in the UK is strictly regulated by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority, to ensure a high quality service, as well as a complete record of treatment for patients.
We are fortunate to work with partners who run one of the largest Donor sperm banks in the UK and so availability and choice is usually assured.
We also provide the appropriate counselling for women and couples on the legal implications of using Donor Sperm.

Donor Sperm from Overseas
Whilst with our partners UK sourced sperm is always available, some women may wish to import sperm from overseas (Europe and America). This may give a wider choice of donors if specific characteristics (physical, ethnic or even religious) are required but would come with significant cost implications.
All sperm imported into the UK has to come from sperm banks approved and licensed with the HFEA. At North West Fertility we are happy to discuss options and facilitate the ordering, shipment and storage of sperm from overseas.
